Bloggers Quilt Festival Fall 2014 – Large Quilt

IMG_1701

I know this quilt is a little older, but I was rearranging rooms this fall and came across it (in a sadly underused room) and fell in love all over again. The colours are so bright and happy, especially with the weather turning gloomy outside.

The fabrics are from V and Co’s Simply Color, one of the best fabric lines ever! I am hording all my scraps from this line as I don’t come across it often now.

HST BOM Quilting

This quilt was made as part of the In Color Order HST BOM. I think the colors work so well with this pattern and it came together wonderfully. My daughter loves all the colours and it is a great quilt to snuggle in this fall as I am in denial that winter is coming!

HST BOM Quilt Back

The quilting follows the chevrons from the backing fabric. I like the simplicity of it and how the angles in the quilting goes well with the angles in the blocks on the front of the quilt.

I am entering this quilt in the large quilt category of the Bloggers Quilt Festival hosted by Amy’s Creative Side.

Abbey’s Bed

Abbey's Bed

There is a new bed in our house, and sadly it isn’t for me.  My dog Abbey has decided this summer that she likes to hang out with me in the quilting room, however she also likes to have something to sleep on.  After a couple of weeks of me getting her bed from another room in the house and bringing it into the quilting room so she would lay down and stop pacing or trying to steal whatever fabric I had laying around, I decided she needed a new bed.  Luckily I had a few scraps of Puppy Park fabric left over from the Doggy Daze quilt that would work.

I didn’t need anything very big so I cut out some 5.5″ squares and sewed them together.  I knew I wanted the quilt to be a little poofy so I used two layers of poly batting I had laying around.  Then there was the question of how to finish it.  I loved the way it looked without a binding (just the top on the design board), so I decided to try Red Pepper Quilt’s tutorial for finishing a quilt without a binding.  It worked like a a charm (although I would not recommend doing this normally with this batting – it was a little slippery).  I finished it off with a simple diagonal straight line quilting.

IMG_1681I love the way this turned out – and the colours fit into my sewing room perfect (she actually lays close to the bed which is home to the Squares of Eden).  Abbey loves her new bed and I am sure will be spending many hours on it.  It was hard to get pictures of it as anytime I set it down she immediately would come and sit or lay on it.  Silly puppy.

Doggy Daze

Doggy DazeAt the beginning of the year I decided to participate in Craft it Forward through facebook.  Earlier this year I sent off a quilt to one friend and have finished off a second project.  This is actually for my friend’s dog Coco.  She had mentioned a couple of times that she was thinking she wanted a quilt for her dog’s spot on the couch.  I did tell her I would make that for her so she could give me the measurements on how big she needed it and let her pick out the fabric she liked.  She fell in love with Puppy Park from Riley Blake, which was perfect for this quilt and the decor in her living room. Then I kept the actual quilt design a secret.  I love how it turned out.

Doggy Daze

I used Julie Herman’s Hex n’ More ruler to cut out the half hexies and then sewed them together in a semi random pattern to fit the size of the quilt needed.

For the quilting I decided to put puppy paw prints running across the quilt and then fill in with stippling.  I love the way it turned out.

She knew that she was getting the quilt, but I had some fabric leftover she I decided to make a couple extras.  First I used the extra half hexies that I had cut out to make a little pillow.

Then I had some squares left over so I made a very small bag using the tutorial for a lined drawstring bag from In Color Order.  I filled the bag with homemade pumpkin dog treats.

Simply HST

Wow, August is turning into a month of finishes for me, which is great.  I love seeing all these quilts come together, yay.

HST BOM Quilt

This week I managed to get all the binding and labelling finished for my Half Square Triangle Block of the Month (HST BOM) quilt from In Color Order’s BOM.  She did the BOM in 2012, but I was not able to start my quilt until January of this year.  I was trying to be good and keep it as a BOM, but in June I got excited and started going ahead.  I am happy I did as I love how it all turned out and that I will have this bright happy quilt for the fall and winter.

I did the quilt using Simply Color fabric line from V and Co.  I love this fabric and all the happy colors in it.

HST BOM Quilt Back

The backing is rainbow chevrons from Riley Blake in large.  This took a little planning as I needed to piece it and I didn’t want the seam to be noticeable.  I managed to get it pretty close but not perfect – no one has noticed so far, lol.

HST BOM Quilting

For the quilting i wanted to stick with something with angels to go with all the triangles on the front.  I decided to quilt it with straight lines in a chevron pattern.  To make things easy, I simply followed the chevrons on the back (and quilted it upside down which was interesting to make sure I didn’t hit any pins!).

Quilt Stats:

Pattern: HST BOM from In Color order

Fabric: Simply Color layer cake, + Kona Snow

Backing: Large Rainbow Chevrons, Riley Blake

Jungle ABCs

Jungle ABCsA friend of mine asked recently if I could make a baby quilt for a friend of hers.  I love making baby quilts, so any excuse is welcome!  The fabric for kids is adorable and the quilts come together so much faster than the larger quilts. This particular quilt was going to be for a little boy and the nursery was being done in an woodland theme.  After a little looking around I found the Life in the Jungle fabric by Doohikey Designs for Riley Blake.

This great quilt on Etsy served as inspiration for design. It was adorable and my friend loved it.  It looked like it would be easy enough to make as I only had a week between arriving back in the country (I was leaving for vacation a couple days after she emailed me) and when the baby was due.  I picked up a fabric panel and a jelly roll and had them waiting for me when I got back.  Using the original quilt as inspiration I started cutting – the precut strips made putting this together a breeze.

I cut out squares from the panel and gave them each a border with a jelly roll strip.  I had to do a little measuring for the longer rectangle as it was a little skinnier than the other blocks from the panel.  I think it worked out okay with a border that is a little wider.

Along the bottom I raw edge appliqued the baby’s name and then quilted with a simple stipple.  The binding is a scrappy binding that I made with the leftover strips of the jelly roll that I had not used to border any of the panel blocks.  The backing is Roll Call in green fabric from the Life in the Jungle collection.

It is going to its new home this week!  It feels good to finally complete a quilt this year!

Happy Halloween

I came across this cute panel this year and decided that it would be perfect for a quick little Halloween quilt.  I needed something quick as I discovered this just over a month away from Halloween, and with the new job I wouldn’t have time to piece and quilt something major before the end of October.

I decided to quilt this with a large spiderweb, and added a spider at my Husband’s encouraging.  I wasn’t sure about doing an all over spiderweb until I saw OCD’s Ghastlies quilt with the spider web.  It gave me the encouragement to give it a go on my quilt.  I am glad I did as I love how it turned out – especially the fat spider hanging out in her web!

Happy Halloween everyone!
