Finished Birdie Stitches BOM from Little Miss Shabby
I have finally finished my Birdie Stitches quilt from the BOM by Little Miss Shabby last year (I know I am really late on this). I stumbled upon this BOM in late spring of last year and debated about doing it – it was cute, but I had never done any embroidery before. I wasn’t sure an entire quilt would be the best project on which I should see if I even liked doing hand embroidery. After looking at pictures from other people participating I figured I would give it a go. I already had some charm packs of Sunkissed so I decided to keep it simple and go with the colours that Little Miss Shabby had provided.
My November block for Birdie Stitches- Remembrance Day (Canada)
I started the quilt in July of 2011 and worked my way through catching up. Part way through I decided to try to draw some of my own blocks – as the Canadian and USA holidays don’t always line up very well (Thanksgiving in November – what?). I also didn’t like the way the June block looked, so I made a new one and used the Original as a label on the back of my quilt.
My June block for Birdie Stitches – camping!
This poor quilt top sat in my sewing room for a couple of months before I could decide on a backing for it and then it sat for a couple more months after I had it basted as I could decide what type of quilting I wanted to do. I ended up doing a straight line quilting that followed a ¼ inch on each side of the seams. It held everything together and I like the resulting grid pattern.
This quilt was a lot of firsts for me – the first BOM I have participated in, the first hand embroidery I have done, and the first time I pieced anything into the back of a quilt! Now I just have to find a home someplace in my house for this lovely little quilt as there is no way I am going to part with this one!
If you would like to use either of my redesigned blocks, they have been posted on the block. Just follow the links for June and November blocks. If you do use my blocks I would love to see your projects.
